How The Powerful NPP National Council Will Decide On Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh Tomorrow

At the Alisa Hotel in Accra tomorrow, Thursday, July 4, 2024, the powerful National Council of the NPP will take a decision on Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s nomination of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, alias Napo as his running mate for the December elections.

This is in line with the Constitution of the party.

Ahead of tomorrow’s meeting, The Thunder publishes the important position the National Council occupies in the party as captured by the NPP Constitution.

Selection of running mate
Article 12 (b) which mentions the selection of the party’s vice presidential candidate says, “The party’s presidential candidate, shall, in consultation with National Executive Committee, nominate his running mate.”

Dr Bawumia has already done this awaiting presentation of the name to the National Council for its decision. From all indications so far, the National Council will endorse Dr Opoku Prempeh.

Article 9 (C) of the party’s Constitution captures the National Council, detailing its activities.

Article 9 (C) 1
There shall be a National Council which, subject to the decisions of the National Delegates Conference, shall direct the affairs of the party in between meetings of the National Delegates Conference, and, for this purpose, may give such directives to the National Chairperson as may be considered necessary for the well-being of the Party.

9 (C) 2
The National Council shall consist of:
i) Voting members of the National Executive Committee
ii) 20 sitting   Parliamentarians   chosen   by   the   party’s Parliamentary Group
iii) Regional representatives
iv) Past National Chairpersons, Presidential Candidates and General Secretaries.

9 (C) 3
Regional representatives shall serve for a terms of three years, but may seek re-election.

The National Council shall meet at least twice a year, provided that no more than seven months shall elapse between the first and second meetings. The presence of at least 1/3 of the members of the National Council shall be necessary to constitute a quorum of the Council.

The National Council shall have the following Standing Committees:
a) Finance Committee
b) Constitutional Committee
c) Organization Committee
d) Research Committee
e)Disciplinary Committee
f) Vetting Committee
g )Finance Committee
