KOD Reveals Selling Cassettes for Despite During Secondary School Years

Everyone has a story to tell — a journey that begins with humble roots and rises through perseverance and purpose. For Kofi Okyere Darko, widely known as KOD, that story is one of transformation, grit, and grace.
The renowned media personality and current Presidential Adviser on Diaspora Affairs opened up about his personal journey during the official launch of the Despite Automobile Museum on Sunday, June 1, 2025. The event, held in East Legon, Accra, attracted a distinguished gathering of royalty, former presidents, political leaders, and prominent figures from business and entertainment.
Among the high-profile guests were His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who officially commissioned the museum, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Nana Kwame Bediako (Cheddar), businessman Ibrahim Mahama, and members of the East Legon Executive Club.
Clad in an elegant long-sleeved lace shirt, white trousers, and polished black shoes, KOD stood out not just for his fashion but for the powerful memories he shared. In an exclusive chat with GH Hyper, he took a moment to reflect on his early connection with the event’s host, Dr. Osei Kwame Despite.
“I used to sell CDs and cassettes for Despite at Daddy Lumba’s shop while I was still in secondary school,” he revealed. “That job exposed me to the music industry and was the stepping stone to everything I’ve achieved today.”
That early exposure, he explained, laid the foundation for a career that has seen him influence both media and music landscapes in Ghana. He also recounted how his behind-the-scenes contributions were often overlooked, particularly during his time at Radio Gold.
“I was one of the quiet contributors during the early days. Although I was also working at Radio Gold, it meant I couldn’t be in the spotlight much,” he added. “Seeing how far Despite has come is incredible. I still fondly call him Bra Osei. His journey is proof that Ghana continues to produce inspiring success stories.”

Dr. Osei Kwame Despite’s own story was central to the day’s celebration. His unveiling of the Despite Automobile Museum marks a major milestone in Ghana’s cultural and tourism landscape. As the third of its kind on the African continent, the museum offers a world-class automotive experience for car enthusiasts, historians, and families alike.
Inside, visitors can explore a curated collection of some of the world’s most iconic cars, each vehicle telling its own story of innovation, heritage, and style. The museum is designed not just to entertain but to educate and inspire.
More than a tribute to engineering, the museum is a bold testament to Dr. Despite’s vision of putting Ghana on the global map of cultural and automotive tourism.
From the nostalgic tales of selling music cassettes to the grandeur of a national museum opening, KOD’s story — like that of Dr. Osei Kwame Despite — reminds us that greatness often begins in the most unassuming of places.
