Bawumia Fulfils Promise To Kayayei; Inaugurates Empowerment Training Centre at Madina

Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has inaugurated the Kayayei Empowerment Training Centre at Madina in Accra.

The Centre, which has training rooms, three pantries, a kitchen, a clinic, 15 washrooms, five dormitories, fire extinguishers, CCTV, 24/7 security, and a food shed, is in fulfillment of a promise the NPP flagbearer made when he visited Agbogbloshie, in Accra in 2019 to greet the head porters.

Under a skills training programme known as “Kayeyei Empowerment Programme” , an initial 5,000 head porters will be trained at skills training centres in the country.

The first batch of 600 beneficiaries will be trained at the Madina and Ashaiman hostel facilities with each beneficiary supported with a seed money of GHc1000.

Fulfillment
“Many doubted this when the promise was made, calling it 419 but once again, we have proven that with a possibility mindset, and the right partnership, nothing is impossible,” he said.

Jobs
“With government adding a training programme to the residential facility, we have moved beyond the promise of addressing their pressing needs, to also offering them transitional job pathways, to enhance their socio-economic status,” he said.

Impact
Dr. Bawumia said the two facilities in Madina and Ashaiman, in addition to more facilities being built in Kumasi and Techiman are expected to rapidly impact the over 100,000 Kayayeis in the country and offer them sustainable livelihood.
