Asanteman Possesses AngloGold Ashanti – Otumfuo

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has said that even though on paper, Ghana’s interest in AngloGold Ashanti is vested in the government, in reality the mine is the possession of Asanteman.

This is because the name of the Asante Kingdom is engraved on the mine. “This cannot be changed. And so its operation is quite important to me,” the King said.

Otumfuo stated these when the new Managing Director of the Obuasi Mine, Samuel Boakye Pobee was introduced to him at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

The Senior Vice President of AngloGold Ashanti Africa Non-operated JVs, Mr Eric Asubonteng led a delegation to the Manhyia Palace.

Investment
The Asantehene stressed the need for substantial investment in the Obuasi Mine by the parent company based in South Africa.

He said the fact that 40% of the total output of the company is from Ghana makes the Mine critical to their operation and survival and thereby his call for investment.

Ghanaian Capabilities
His Majesty expressed concern about Ghanaian businesses hiring the services of foreigners to manage their affairs.

He said Ghanaians have the capabilities to manage large companies in the country. He, therefore, expressed delight seeing another Ghanaian appointed as the Managing Director of the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine.

Continuous Support
The new MD appealed to Otumfuo to continue with his strong support to the Mine. “I have heard about the unalloyed support Otumfuo has been giving the Mine and how keen he is about it. I also realized the role he played in the resuscitating the Mine. I use this occasion to thank him because I would not have gotten this job today without that effort. I plead with Otumfuo to give me the same support he gave my brother Eric,” he said.
