Titus Glover slams NDC over Wontumi detention; This is political persecution
Former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover, has criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of abusing power over the ongoing detention of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Addressing the media at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Friday afternoon, Mr Glover described the arrest as politically motivated and warned the NDC that their actions would not break the spirit of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“I think that clearly, you can see the political undertone. This is purely persecution. A kite cannot be in the air forever, it will definitely come down. So if the NDC and the president and Raymond Acher think they have power, so they are using it excessively to intimidate NPP and, for that matter, Chairman Wontumi, then they have lost it,” he said.
He recounted the circumstances surrounding Wontumi’s arrest, describing it as unnecessarily aggressive. “On day one, when he was arrested in a Rambo style, I said the spirit of the elephant is strong and united, you can’t break it. It is rather emboldening us, it is encouraging us to stand united as a political party, and we will work hard.”
Mr Glover insisted the NPP would not be discouraged by the current situation and even sarcastically encouraged the government to continue. “So whatever they are doing, they should continue and do it, we will even clap for them, but Chairman Wontumi will definitely come out.”
On the legal matters surrounding Wontumi’s arrest, he said, “I am not interested in the charges because nobody in the NPP will support anybody who has breached the law. If they believe that Chairman has a problem with the law, they should arrange for him to go to court.”
He stressed that the case involving Exim Bank is civil in nature. “That Exim Bank matter is a civil matter. If he has taken a loan from Exim Bank, you only file a suit in court, and he will go and make his case. But you don’t hold him here in a Rambo style and try to show force.”
Mr Glover expressed hope that Wontumi’s bail conditions would soon be met.
“They can go ahead and do whatever they want to do, but definitely, people being talked to, so we can meet his bail conditions, and our brother will come out. We will wait and see what happens. Our prayer is that those friends who have been talked to will be able to support and meet the bail conditions.”
“What is good for the goose must be good for the gander. But NPP will come to power. We will work very hard, we will unite our party and come to power, so they should continue,” he added.
