I’m Proud Of My Record – Bawumia
Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party ( NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that he is proud of his record as Vice President.
Answering questions from journalists at his media engagement on Sunday, August 25, in Accra, he mentioned how he has performed various tasks assigned to him by his boss, the President to testify to his delivery.
On that score, he promised to provide the leadership that Ghana requires going into the future if he is elected President.
Manifesto promises
Dr Bawumia said the support he has given to the President has resulted in the government achieving 80% of the promises in their 2020 manifesto.
“I think that we have a very pretty record in terms of honouring our promises. We honoured 83% of our 2016 manifesto. And when you look at the 2020 manifesto, even in the midst of all these crises, we are fulfilling or we’ve fulfilled 80 percent of our 2020 promises in our manifesto.
“My opponent, in his 2012 manifesto, when he became the President, he only fulfilled 28 percent of his 2012 manifesto, 280 promises, he didn’t fulfil 203 of the 280 promises. So, I think we have a better record as far as fulfilling promises.”
No full authority
Further explaining why he has not been able to help the government fulfill some key manifesto promises, the NPP flagbearer said as Vice President, he doesn’t have full authority over decisions.
“In cabinet, we argue on many issues and sometimes your views prevail, sometimes not. Once a decision is taken it’s final,“ he stated.
Dr Bawumia added: “The budget that has gone to Parliament, which has been passed, is not my budget. The budget goes in the name of the President, it doesn’t go in the name of the Vice President,” he explained, adding that, his influence is limited within the scope of his current position.
He pointed out that even Mahama, with full presidential power, was unable to fulfil all his promises during his term. “Even President Mahama, who was President, why didn’t he do everything then? I mean, why is he coming back?”
