2 Soldiers, 3 Civilians Shot in Bawku: Bawku Naba’s Statue Destroyed; Defence Minister Institutes Investigations

Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has ordered a thorough investigation into renewed violence in Bawku, where two soldiers and three Mamprusi civilians were shot on Sunday.
The attacks were followed by the destruction of a statue honouring Bawku Naba Asigri Abubrago Azorka III.
In a Facebook post, the minister urged calm and promised swift action based on investigation findings.
“We are once again calling for restraint in Bawku following yesterday’s developments,” he stated.
Attack
Reports monitored by The Thunder indicate that the soldiers were ambushed while escorting a bus carrying Mamprusis into Bawku Township.
The injured are currently receiving treatment at Bawku Hospital.
The incident heightened tensions, prompting Dr. Omane Boamah to reiterate calls for peace.
Some social media users criticized the government’s perceived inaction, to which the minister responded: “Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is leading the traditional mediation efforts. Government interference in that process would be unwise.”
Statue vandalized
Footage circulating online shows the vandalized statue of the Bawku Naba, allegedly destroyed by soldiers in retaliation for the attack on their colleagues.
The statue, erected earlier this year, was a symbol of pride for the Kusasi community.
“This is an insult to all of Kusaug. We demand the statue’s restoration,” a Kusasi Facebook user wrote. Unconfirmed reports suggest the Bawku Naba was moved to a secure location following the unrest.
